“It’s obvious I’ve had a good career and earned money. The last thing I thought I’d be accused of by going to Manchester United was doing it for money. I could have gone to lots of other clubs and earned more.”
“The attraction from Manchester United’s end was that they could get a free transfer and use their name and their ability to win trophies and their kudos to attract players such as me. That’s where they’ve got an advantage, where they wouldn’t have to pay bigger wages. At other clubs a wealthy investor might have to pay twice as much as everyone else because if they don’t they won’t get the player.”
“My situation is the opposite. I’ve been attracted to the club by the players, by the manager, the ability to win things. Money is not the motivation. I’ve had a great career. I’ve done really well. My management company concluded the deal with United in hours. That shows you. I wanted to play under the manager and in a fantastic team. I just can’t believe how many people think otherwise.”

“You can see the difference between being a keeper here and in La Liga - in particular, in the game at West Brom the surprise on David de Gea’s face at how difficult and physical it is to go out and catch a cross. He’s learning fast. You can’t say he is United’s weakness. At 1-0 against Arsenal he saved a penalty that changed the game. Then they scored eight goals and without that save it could have been a different story. And against Bolton he made a good save from Martin Petrov, so every game he is improving.”

Q: How does the United fan respond when Arsenal fan invites him for dinner?
A: Sorry mate, I already 8 - 2 much.

“Wayne is flying again, he’s been excellent all week and he’s still very much at the forefront of this side.”
“Everyone has been talking about younger players and older players but Wayne doesn’t really fall into either category. He still has an awful lot to give over the next 10 years, I’m very confident of that.”
“He’s showed some great early form for Manchester United and just continued that when he linked up with England. He’s great to have around the camp as well, he never settles for anything less than winning, even in training, and his enthusiasm rubs off on the younger players.”
